Ram stands for Random entrance Memory. It is one of the most prominent components inside a computer. Ram is the working memory of the computer. One of the core components that have a key role in determining the speed and the size of the memory a motherboard can hold is the Front Side Bus ( Fsb ). Front Side Bus is the bridge in the middle of the Cpu and the Ram. Let's say the that the Fsb operates at a speed of 800 Mhz. If your Ram modules operate at a speed higher than this they will not work properly or even not work at all. This can happen if you buy a memory module that is too new for a unavoidable kind of motherboard. This is not a problem that happens frequently today because the Fsb and the memory modules have discrete speeds they can adapt and they adjust their speed according the Fsb speed. If you don't know what kind of speeds your motherboard supports, you can read the motherboard documentation or go online to the motherboard manufacturer's website. But if you first have to know the brand and the model of your motherboard.You can do this by chance the computer case and watching for that.It is imprinted on the motherboard.

2) Are the Ram slots single, dual or triple channel?

Single-channel means your motherboard can entrance one Ram module at a time. In this kind of channeling it doesn't matter the order in which you put the Ram modules into their slots.If the motherboards supports dual-channeling,you have to put the Ram modules in pairs. Every pair should be the same size, the same speed and even the same brand. If you do this, your motherboard can entrance two Ram modules at the same time. But if you don't do this, the motherboard will not entrance two Ram modules at the same time and will operate at the speed of the slowest Ram module. In triple-channeling you have to join 3 Ram modules. If there are 4 slots and you put a fourth Ram module in expanding to the 3 for triple-channeling, the triple-channeling will be broken and they will operate at the slowest speed.

3) the technology of Ram

Each technology has dissimilar speeds, notch positions, voltage requirement etc. There are many technologies such Ddr, Ddr2 and Ddr3 being the latest and the fastest. Ddr2 is slower and as a follow cheaper. Ddr is an even older technology. These days it is rarely sold by it exists and you have be aware of it if you motherboard has that kind of technology. You can find what type of technology you Ram modules or module supports by watching the Ram module itself. It written on the Ram module as a matter of fact "Ddr..." or "Ddr2..." or "Ddr3...".
