Key Facts You Will Want to Remember for a Stress-Free Laptop Sodimm Upgrade!

Once your laptop loses oomph, it's often that the cause is low principles memory. You've likely heard that contemporary laptop memory upgrades come in the form of a laptop Sodimm, but just what are they, and possibly most importantly, how can you buy the one right for your laptop? To save you confusion, let's go over the vital aspects you should know before clicking the order button!

What is a laptop Sodimm?

Ddr2 Ddr3

A laptop Sodimm is the shorthand term for laptop Small form Dual Inline Memory Module. Quite a mouthful wouldn't you think? Fortunately, a Sodimm is rather small and is the name given to the Pcb (Printed Circuit Board) on which contemporary laptop memory is sold.

Consequently, each time you stumble across a laptop memory upgrade, it's very likely to be a laptop Sodimm of some sort. Does this mean all laptop Sodimm's are identical? Unfortunately not, but luck has it that it's not as complicated as it sounds.

Laptop Sodimm's differ depending on what type of memory they feature. Older Sdram Sodimm's for example are 144pin, slightly newer Ddr and Ddr2 Sodimm's are 200pin while the currently most recent Ddr3 Sodimm's are 204pin. Their corporal dimensions also vary but ever so slightly.

The main thing to remember is that laptop Sodimm's of varying types can't be mixed together in the same laptop. For example, if your laptop uses Ddr3 memory then there's no use trying to install a Ddr2 Sodimm in there. It's not merely the number of pins that vary but also the pin layout, operating voltage, timings and addressing etc.

Does this mean upgrading is a burden best left to professionals? Of procedure not!

Laptop Sodimm compatibility

While it's impossible to mix and match Sdram, Ddr, Ddr2 or Ddr3 Sodimm's (any combination) together it's normally just fine to mix and match the same types of Sodimm's together, even if the brand of memory differs. Let's put this into perspective.

For example, say you have a Ddr2 laptop that shipped with a single Ddr2 Sodimm. Its capacity is pretty much irrelevant but let's assumes its 2Gb. You now want to upgrade to 4Gb but the Ddr2 laptop memory upgrade you purchased is of a separate brand than the one currently installed (i.e. Samsung Vs Hynix). Will this work? In 99% of cases yes! You see, the brand is for most part a non-issue, what's relevant any way is that both modules are Ddr2 thus result the Ddr2 Sodimm specification.

Even if the memory timings differ in the middle of the modules then this is also approved (unless you want every ounce of carrying out you can get). The only aspect you should pay attention to when purchasing is the memory speed. For example, if that current 2Gb Ram is of the Pc2-5300 (667Mhz effective) variety, you want to make sure your new Ddr2 laptop Sodimm is also at least Pc2-5300, otherwise the memory controller within your laptop will be forced to run both Sodimm's at the speed of the lesser (i.e. Slower) Sodimm. To extrapolate this further, Pc2-5300 and Pc2-6400 Ddr Sodimm modules will work together albeit at 667Mhz and not 800Mhz (effective).

So why will mixing separate brands of laptop Sodimm's only work in 99% of cases. The short riposte is incompatibility. The long riposte is as follows, some lesser brands of laptop memory do not always 100% result the Jdec (the organisation what devises memory specifications) specification, at other times Bios's (Basic Input Out System) found in laptops aren't without bugs. The net result is a laptop that will continuously beep when turned on while displaying a black screen.

Is there a way to upgrade without potentially facing any such problems and diminishing performance? Nothing will 100% warrant you leave from laptop Sodimm contrast issues, after all it's you who clicks the order button, any way as long as you stick to some key recommendations then we're almost determined you'll be smiling in no time at all.

Upgrading laptop Sodimm's - key recommendations to think prior to buying

We've compiled the below shortlist of aspects you should pay attention to when seeking to buy a laptop Sodimm. For peace of mind we propose that you:

A) Where inherent try and buy the same brand of memory to what you already have installed Or buy a laptop memory upgrade from a respected brand

B) Buy the same speed of memory to what's currently installed, i.e. If Pc2-5300 is installed then buy a Pc2-5300 laptop Sodimm as it's very rare that the memory controller in your laptop can run at a higher memory spec, and even if it can, the currently installed slower memory will preclude this (unless you convert all Sodimm's to the new faster spec)

C) Where financially feasible to do so, always try and buy Sodimm's of the same capacity to what you currently have installed (see below as to why)

D) If the laptop memory upgrade you plan to buy doesn't feature a lifetime warranty then it's best to avoid it altogether, respected memory brands offer lifetime warranties because they believe in their products, so should you (for peace of mind)

E) naturally buy mainstream laptop Sodimm's rather than carrying out laptop Sodimm's. The latter will feature faster memory timings, which offer a modest carrying out boost. For them to run at these timings any way all installed memory modules must meet this spec. As your currently installed laptop will likely feature somewhat slower timings, your laptop's Bios will use these, and not the faster timings.

Laptop Sodimm dual channel mode

The vast majority of contemporary laptops retain what is known as dual channel mode. In practise, this means two laptop Sodimm's are accessed in parallel for enhanced carrying out (bandwidth).

When dual channel mode was introduced (in Ddr memory laptops) it only operated in what's known as synchronous mode. Newer Ddr2 and Ddr3 memory laptop retain both synchronous and asynchronous mode.

Synchronous mode only works when two identical Sodimm's are installed. In this case identical also extends to mean two modules of the same capacity, for example, 2x 512Mb = 1Gb.

Asynchronous mode on the other hand only works when two non-identical Sodimm's are installed, non-identical in the sense that they vary in capacity, for example 1x 1Gb and 1x2Gb = 3Gb.

Regardless whether you have an older Ddr memory laptop or newer Ddr2 or Ddr3 laptop, always try and install Sodimm's of the same capacity. Doing so will ensure your memory (where your laptop supports dual channel mode) runs in synchronous mode.

If you have a Ddr2 or newer laptop that supports dual channel mode and install non-identical capacity Sodimm's, this will force asynchronous mode. In such situation, only part of your memory will control in dual channel mode, the other part will run in single channel mode.

The Benefits of Memory Upgrade Are Huge

If you are concerned in making your computer run faster than usual, you need to install right type of memory. There is verily no doubt about the fact that computers and laptops have become much more sophisticated but a need to upgrade your memory can crop up anytime.

The benefits of upgrading your Ram:

Ddr2 Ddr3

Suppose your son wants to play a game having heavy graphics or you want to deal with four applications at the same time. That's the situation where you will face a lot of question due to the insufficient memory. To boost carrying out of your engine you need to consider the selection of upgrading your existing Ram.

Some of the most tasteless benefits of memory upgrade are mentioned here for your understanding.

o It will make you palpate smoother multitasking. Multitasking is all about occasion several programs at once like reading charts and checking emails along with listening to your favorite music. Memory upgrade will greatly support in this regard.

o If your firm involves internet, you just can not afford to compromise over speed. That's exactly the point where memory upgrade will help you in a great way.

o Spectacular gaming palpate is the supervene of upgraded memory.

o If you use Windows Xp or Vista for instance, you need to pay attention to this otherwise you will not be able to enjoy optimized processing.

o If you run a server to achieve distinct task, a memory upgrade will hugely sway the carrying out of your machine.

Where to buy?

It is clear to see that there are several benefits that can be acquired through memory upgrade. But, when it comes to buying it for your laptop or server, it becomes highly difficult to find a exquisite site. That's exactly the point where you have to spend some time in researching.

The most prominent thing in this regard is about checking the possible of a site. There are distinct sites selling memory but you need to shop form a site offering all types of memory, including Ddr memory, Ddr2 memory, Ddr3 memory, Sdram and Edo memory, fully Buffered memory, Rambus Rdram memory, etc. If a site is not offering all types of memory, it is not possible for you to get good rates and that's the reasons why it is good to avoid one such site.

The fact of the matter is that there are lots of benefits of memory upgrade but they can only be enjoyed if you buy right type from a right site. This can verily be a tricky situation to be in but you can all the time make things easier by performing some research. What to Upgrade on Your Pc

Well first of all if you would like to upgrade something on your personal computer you are facing one out of two situations. Either you are just not satisfied with the performances that your computer has to offer and you would just like to enhance on those component a bit or you want to just take your personal computer to the next level so that it will stay up to speed with the current trends of technology, software and games.

Either way you are looking for an upgrade and you are right to do so.

Ddr2 Ddr3

Now you can upgrade your components directly or you can upgrade your software. It is a wise move as these two very often go hand in hand. There are cases of computer parts being so new or advanced that older games naturally will not work on them because the new parts are too god.

These are some of the upgrades you can add to your personal computer.

You can enhance the processing power of your Cpu naturally by taking a visit to the nearest computer shop in your vicinity and for a small fee a smart chap with big glasses will associate his laptop to your Pc and he will do his magic.

You can add Ram - random access memory to your computer if you have the free slots required for such a move on your motherboard.

And you could add a few coolers to your personal computer case so that all the circuits and wires that work diligently to satisfy your need are all the time recirculated and chilled with air to prevent overheating and usage.

All the upgrades are beneficial without a doubt for your Pc and they will not cost you very much either.

What you should know for a fact is that no matter how long you keep upgrading you computer and no matter how long you keep enhancing your software or computer statistics technology is still going to develop and your machine will become obsolete after a few year. Ram has gone from Sdram to Ddr to Ddr2 and now Ddr3; descriptive cards have gone from Agp to Pci to Pci Express and now Pci Express 2; your hard disk drives have gone from Ata to Sata to Sata 2 and so on and so forth.

Upgrade your computer wisely, increase it's lifespan however when you need to let it go then get a new machine.

Buying a New Pc - Should You Upgrade, Or Buy a New Computer, Or Build Your Own?

If you've been using the same computer for several years, chances are that its carrying out might be degrading. You might consideration your computer is moderately becoming slower and slower. One speculate why computers come to be slow over time is that advances in technology are making software and hardware requirements go up.

Upgrading your current theory is the most cost efficient depending on the parts you want to upgrade. For most people, adding more memory (Ram) can give your theory a primary boost. They come in three flavors: Ddr, Ddr2, and Ddr3. Ddr2 memory modules are the most coarse in the market and are relatively cheap, being or less. Pick the type of module your computer accepts; a theory can only accept one of three flavors, e.g. A theory may take Ddr2 but not Ddr or Ddr3.

Ddr2 Ddr3

If you're a gamer, reconsider upgrading your video card. Most pre-built computer systems have integrated graphics, which share the same Ram with the Cpu, giving the theory a penalty in performance. Dedicated video cards have their own memory and processor, letting the main memory and Cpu do other things, thus giving your theory a carrying out boost. For decent performance, a contemporary mid-range card for around 0-0 will be sufficient.

Upgrading your Cpu is regularly not cost effective. Depending on what you use your theory for, the carrying out boost can be minimal. It can be an upgrade worth inspecting if you're upgrading to a high-end motor and know what you're doing, but it's fairly complicated to replace the Cpu and its fan (or other cooling system). If you're inspecting upgrading your Cpu, reconsider buying a new pre-built Pc. Or, if you're willing to spend some time, learn to build your own Pc.

If you're inspecting a new Pc, conclude whether or not you're going to use it for gaming, office work or both. If you're a gamer, construction your own might be the best way to go as you're choosing what goes in your system; you can build one without breaking the bank, for no more than 00. Otherwise, there are prebuilt systems out there for around 0 or less if traditional use is office work.

Deciding whether you should upgrade your system, buy a prebuilt Pc, or construction your own is easy. conclude which upgrade is most cost-effective for you, and that's within your budget. You might even learn a thing or two about how computers work.

Windows Vista - How to Upgrade Your Computer Ram

The data on a computer can be stored in two ways together with Ram and external devices. Examples of external devices are hard drives, Cd Rom and Usb drives. The original storage is the Ram while the secondary storage is the external devices.

The Ram is installed inside the law unit. It helps to store the data packets temporarily before they are being sent to the Cpu. Due to this fact, the Ram helps to make your computer work faster and more efficient. The secondary storage ensures that your files are backup properly.

Ddr2 Ddr3

If you are using Windows Xp, you can check how much Ram your computer has by going to the control Panel. In the control Panel, you should double click on the law icon. After you have double click the law icon, the law properties window will pop up. When the law properties window appear, you should switch to the general tab. Under the general tab, you will find data about the estimate of Ram in your computer.

If you are using Windows Vista, you should click on the law and Maintenance icon the control Panel. Next, you should click the law icon. In the law section, you should be able to see the estimate of Ram in your computer.

There are many types of Ram together with Sdr, Sdram, Ddr, Sdrram, Ddr2,Ddr3 and etc. Dissimilar types of Ram offer Dissimilar types of speed performance. For example, the Ddr 3 Ram offers a faster operation than the Ddr 2.

When upgrading the Ram, make sure you take into account the types of program you want to run. For example, if your game requires a 4Gb Ram, you must purchase a 4Gb Ram so that the game can run smoothly.

Before installing the Ram, you must shut down the computer and disconnect the peripheral devices. Next, you must remove the cover of the tower. To prevent electrostatic shock, you should wear a wrist band. After that, you should remove the cards and components to obtrude your way to the Ram sockets. After you locate the old Ram on the motherboard, you must cut off it gently. When installing the Ram, make sure you the bottom of the Ram stick line up with the notches in the motherboard.

Sodimm Memory Frequency, Capacity, Timings - How to balance Your Next Laptop Memory Upgrade

Your laptop grinds under the strain of software memory requirements forcing you to purchase a laptop memory upgrade. The interrogate is, how do you go about buying an upgrade that reaps the most benefits? We'll take a look at this below.

Sodimm Memory Frequency

Ddr2 Ddr3

Regardless of the type of memory, be it Sdram, Ddr, Ddr2, Ddr3 etc. Memory frequency pays a pivotal role in its performance. You see, frequency influences the speed at which bytes can be read and written to and from a Sodimm memory module.

The faster the frequency of a Sodimm memory module, the greater the bandwidth ready to your system, thus finally the software you run. Some software benefits more than others when more bandwidth is available, nevertheless it's generally a good idea to have more of it if possible.

Of procedure depending on your model of laptop, it might not be potential to make use of higher frequency Sodimm memory modules. The underpinning for this is simple, while a laptop supporting for example Pc2-4200 Ddr2 Sodimm memory that runs at 533Mhz sufficient can have a higher rated Sodimm memory module of the same type but higher grade installed (i.e. Pc2-5300 Ddr2 running at 667Mhz), the net ensue will still be memory that runs at a maximum of 533Mhz. This is true unless of procedure the memory controller in that laptop supports the frequency of the faster memory. Regularly laptop manufacturers already setup the fastest grade of memory during production..

Should you halt that your laptop does support faster Sodimm memory modules, it may just be worth upgrading all the installed memory to anything highest grade is supported. Memory frequency is the amount one contributor to memory bandwidth therefore by in large performance. Do note how we wrote "all" the installed memory. You see, for your laptop to run at the faster memory frequency, all installed Sodimm memory must meet this specification thus be of the same grade. If your laptop has two Sodimm memory slots (this is the norm) then in practise both Sodimm memory modules must be identical. For example, in a Ddr2 memory based laptop this might be Pc2-6400, in a Ddr laptop Pc3200, in a Sdram laptop Pc133 or any other ready combination. Plainly ensue this line of conception and you'll be okay.

Sodimm Memory Capacity

The amount of memory you have installed in your laptop is what generally speaking finally defines how plane software runs. Consequently, while memory frequency is a key factor to Sodimm memory performance, the capacity of memory installed is basic for allinclusive principles performance.

How much memory you need is dependent on what software you run. Unfortunately, there's no golden rule that magically works for each and every application out there. Fortunately any way there's an old principle that lends a helping hand: more memory always helps. Essentially what this translates to in practise is this: setup more memory than you need as this way you're far less likely to run into slowdowns, providing of procedure the slowdowns are the ensue of low principles memory and not, per se, the processor, graphics card, storehouse gadget etc.

Does this sound too good to be true? Regrettably yes, for three reasons. Firstly, buying too much laptop memory will likely aid laptop doing at the cost of upsetting your wallet. Secondly, in an ideal world all laptops, be them new or old, would support the currently maximum capacity of ready Sodimm memory modules. Obviously the world isn't an ideal place and thus you can only upgrade to the maximum capacity supported by your laptop's memory controller. Thirdly, if you're running a 32bit Operating principles on a laptop supporting 4Gb or more of memory then just keep in mind that even though the memory will work, applications will not use the full 4Gb. This is a limitation of 32bit addressing, only some of this namespace is ready to principles memory, the rest must be used for addressing other types of memory within your laptop, for example that of the graphics card. To overcome this on laptops that support it, upgrade to a 64bit Operating System.

Starting to sound slightly complicated? Let's break this down into simple English. What you should deduct from this is as follows: buy as much memory as your wallet and laptop allows but reconsider the limitations of 32bit Operating Systems. If you plan to upgrade to 4Gb or more of memory and have a newer laptop then upgrade its Operating principles to a 64bit version. If your laptop supports 4Gb but only 32bit Operating Systems then just keep in mind that the maximum your applications will likely see descriptive thus use is colse to 3.25-3.5Gb.

Sodimm Memory Timings

Computer memory feature what's known as timings. These are numerical values which laid out delays in how a Sodimm memory module operates. The actual values vary depending on the type of memory (i.e. Ddr2) and either the given Sodimm memory module is mainstream or a doing part. Such delays control all the types of commands that get executed when your computer issues a read, write or copy command. Such timings are stored on each Sodimm memory module in what's known as a Spd (Serial presence Detect) chip, placed on the same Pcb (Printed Circuit Board) as the memory chips.

Because memory timings are finally delays then one might think it's logical to assume that lower timings are better. This can be answered as true but only to an extent. You see, there is only so much that these timings can be lowered, even if a Sodimm memory module has been binned as a doing part. This is due to synchronisation issues. Memory timings control how slow or how fast a given doing is processed by a Sodimm memory module. If it's set too fast then the outcome may be unstable operation. At the very least this will cause erroneous software behaviour, or if you're less fortunate a principles halt.

Since enhanced memory timings can only conduce so much to real-world principles doing (circa 5% real-world doing boost), it's actually a case of choosing either you believe the added speed boost (i.e. Slightly more memory bandwidth, somewhat lower memory entrance latency) is adequate to guarantee the price premium. Various tests over the years suggest no, even if you setup "performance" Sodimm memory, you're not likely to feel the divergence in any type of software but benchmarks.

Conclusion

There are some important facts to recall from the above. First and important memory frequency plays a pivotal role in memory performance, otherwise defined at the speed at which memory read, write and thus copy commands get processed. The higher the memory bandwidth, the more it indirectly influences allinclusive principles performance. Secondly, memory capacity is what directly affects the allinclusive speed of your laptop by having a direct influence on computer performance. The more memory you have installed, the far less likely you are to run into slowdowns caused by insufficient memory resources ready to the Operating principles and other software. Thirdly, memory timings act as an icing on the cake (for a better term) to both memory frequency and capacity.

The above is the theory, but what should you do when getting ready to buy your laptop memory upgrade? always get the highest frequency of Sodimm memory your laptop supports by determining the highest speed grade supported by its memory controller. Wherever your wallet permits, also try and upgrade to a salutary amount of memory, above what you're bound to currently use thus leaving yourself some headroom. Do any way remember that your laptop's memory controller also limits the maximum capacity you can upgrade to. Finally, where feasible (something you will have to deduce yourself), pick a Sodimm memory module(s) with faster (lower) timings - if doing parts aren't ready then the most you will lose is about 5% allinclusive principles performance.
